Do you know how to care for bleached or highlighted hair? I’ll explain how!!!
As I am absolutely sure that what has happened to me has happened to more people, I am going to explain step by step everything you should do to take care of your hair and I will also give you an example of what happened to me. . I hope all this information helps you and, I hope, you don’t read before you screw up like it happened to me…
Bleached or highlighted hair: products
- Proper washing:
Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo to wash your bleached hair. Avoid washing it daily, as it can dry it out even more. This is the advice that many places will give you, but when it comes down to it, what shampoo should I use? Look, I’m going to tell you my experience; I have tried everything, and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING, and the only thing that has really worked well for me is this:

Kerastase blonde shampoo and mask. And I am very serious, because I have almost always worn my hair blonde, (with super lightening dye), but I don’t know what kind of dementia it gave me, that after the pandemic it occurred to me to darken the roots and start getting highlights. BAD IDEA.
At the hairdresser they make everything very nice for you, they do highlight them here or there, but the only thing they want is to make money (because it is much more expensive to get highlights than just roots). They don’t really care about your hair; If they cared, they would be honest and tell you clearly that the highlights are discolorations and that, yes or yes, ends up damaging the hair a lot….. and if you don’t believe me, look at all the hair with highlights or highlights how they end up over time; Take a look and tell me….
So, once I realized the «highlights trick» I decided to go back to the platinum blonde I had always worn, and what happened? Well, not only did the hair salon I had been to always refuse to dye my roots with super lightener, but other supposedly good hair salons also refused. In the end I had to go to a store specializing in hairdressing supplies and ask them for advice.
They advised me to use super lightener with 30 oxygenated and so I did. Blonde again yes, but the highlights had destroyed my hair, so I had no choice but to make a serious reflection: either I’m going to the hairdresser to get ripped off and have my hair burned with highlights that are very expensive to do, Or I spend that money (or even less) on really good products and make it myself. And that’s what I did. I bought the dye that I leave you below, I bought the Kerastase shampoo and mask that I also leave you below, and I started dyeing my hair at home every 4 weeks. Here is what I use:
Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaextreme Conditioning Hair Mask | For Weak, Sensitized Hair Post-Bleaching | Repairs and Nourishes Damage and Split Ends | With Hyaluronic Acid & Edelweiss Flower | 6.8 Fl Oz
A deeply conditioning hair mask infused with hyaluronic acid to strengthen and soften blonde hair damaged from lightening treatments.

Look carefully when you buy it because there are 2 types of mask for blondes: one that is dark lilac that is for toning and the other that says CICAEXTREME on the label, which is the one that I recommend for repair. This one that I have posted above is from Cicaextreme and if you zoom in on the image you will see what appears in the image on the right.
Likewise, in all the products in the Kerastase range for blondes you should pay attention, both in masks and shampoos, that the name Cicaextreme (or Cicaplasme) appears on the labels, because this is what really repairs ultra-processed hair with bleaching and dyes. super lightening.
Now I’m going to give you the shampoo that I use and that, like the mask, is also ultra gentle for bleached hair. In this case it is called «Bain lumiere» and it is transparent with a very light violet color:
Kerastase Blond Absolu Lumière Illuminating Shampoo | For Lightened, Highlighted and Grey Hair | Nourishes and Illuminates | With Hyaluronic Acid
A daily shampoo formulated with hyaluronic acid to deeply cleanse, strengthen, hydrate, and add shine for lightened or blonde hair.

- Conditioner for bleached or highlighted hair:
Apply a hydrating conditioner after each wash to maintain the softness and shine of bleached hair. You can also use hair masks once a week for extra hydration.
My advice is that you don’t wash your hair every day because it is delicate but, if you are like me who goes to the gym to sweat (and not to chat on your cell phone), then I recommend these two things that will be great for you. One is the conditioner, and the other is for styling afterwards and detangling; although it is actually a thermal protector. Here I leave them:

The photo you have here is of my conditioner, it is the second bottle I have used and the truth is that, even if I combine it with other ranges from the same brand, I will always use this one as long as I am blonde, so…
Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaflash Conditioner | For Bleached, Highlighted, and Damaged Hair | Repairs and Nourishes | Protects Against Breakage | With Hyaluronic Acid
A lightweight conditioner to nourish, hydrate, and soften all blonde hair types, infused with hyaluronic acid to strength and protect against breakage.
- Thermal protection for bleached or highlighted hair:
Before using heat tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, or curling irons, apply a heat protectant to prevent further damage to bleached hair. Likewise, even if you are not going to use the dryer, I recommend that you still use the texturizer or thermal protector; more than anything because having such delicate hair it will be the only way to protect it. This is the one I told you about before:
It is from the same range for blondes: Blond Absolu Cicaplasme. Put 3 or 4 doses in your hand and distribute it throughout your hair; then you can comb it.
Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaplasme Heat Protecting Hair Serum | For Lightened, Highlighted and Grey Hair | Fortifies and Nourishes | With Hyaluronic Acid | 5.1 Fl Oz
A leave-in serum infused with hyaluronic acid to hydrate, strengthen, and prevent breakage with heat protection up to 450°F for lightened and highlighted blonde hair.

Another thing that works great and is from the same range is the repair oil. In my case I have curly, fine and quite dry hair, so you can imagine how it looked on me after the highlighting of my nose… Look, this is the oil that I recommend from the same range:

Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaextreme Strengthening Hair Oil | For Damaged, Bleached and Highlighted Hair | Repairs and Strengthens | With Hyaluronic Acid & Edelweiss Flower
A lightweight oil to restore, strengthen, increase softness, reduce frizz, and add shine for damaged, lightened hair
- Avoid the sun:
Sun exposure can cause bleached color to fade faster and cause your hair to burn even more. Use sunscreen for your hair (like the ones I listed above) or wear hats to protect your hair.
- Regular cuts:
Maintain your bleached hair with regular trims to eliminate split ends and keep it healthy. For this purpose, hairdressers are not very trustworthy, but it is preferable to have your ends cut rather than to have highlights or bleaching done.

- Avoid excessive use of chemicals:
Avoid using styling products with alcohol or aggressive ingredients that can further damage your bleached hair. Forget about supermarket and drugstore products, believe me. No matter how pretty they paint them, they are NOT even close to the quality of the ones I recommend. It is preferable that you save and buy them little by little, rather than buying cheap products that do not work for you or that, in the worst case scenario, will damage your hair even more.
Remember that hair takes time to grow and that by the time you realize that the product you are using is bad, it will already be too late. Trust me, it’s better to be safe than sorry; and this is told to you by a person who has always worn his hair very long and now wears it over his shoulders for fooling around with mediocre products advertised on television.
- Keratin treatments:
Keratin treatments can help restore the health and strength of your bleached hair. Consult your hairdresser to find the right treatment for you.
- Internal hydration:
In addition to taking care of your hair externally, make sure you maintain a balanced diet, eat enough protein, and drink enough water to keep your hair and body healthy.
With these tips and care, you can keep your bleached hair healthy, shiny and beautiful.
Toning blondes
As for toning shampoos, I can tell you that, if your hair is very porous due to so many highlights or bleaching, it is more than likely that when you use a lilac shampoo, your ends will turn lilac. This, don’t let anyone fool you, happens with ALL violet shampoos. Although it is true that, with some more than with others, and also some dry out more than others.
That’s why I advise you that before you start toning your hair, spread the tip with oil or mask so that the lilac pigment doesn’t stick so much; And on the other hand, I recommend these two shampoos that for me are the best for toning because they do not pigment the violet as much, nor are they as drying as others:

Olaplex No. 4P Blonde Enhancer Purple Toning Shampoo, Repairs, Hydrates, & Brightens All Blonde, Lightened, & Grey Hair, 8.5 fl oz
Highly concentrated purple shampoo cleanses, tones, and repairs while keeping hair hydrated from roots to ends.
The other shampoo is obviously Kerastase, which costs more or less the same price as Olaplex:
Kerastase Blond Absolu Ultra-Violet Purple Shampoo | For Lightened, Highlighted and Grey Hair
Neutralizes Brassy and Yellow Undertones | Hydrates and Protects | With Hyaluronic Acid | 8.5 Fl Oz

Super lightening blonde dyes

Finally I am going to explain to you about super lightening dyes. Although it may seem simple to choose the color of the dye, in reality it is not easy, since you have to take into account your base color and whether you have gray hair or not.
Unlike discolorations, the super-lightening dye is more effective the higher the oxygenation; That’s why in my case, since I’m dark-skinned, I use the 40v oxygenated one.
