Do you know how to care for your dyed hair (but not bleached)?
Although many people believe that dye is not super lightening or bleaching, that it does not damage the hair, the truth is that it does damage it, although not at the same speed of course. Let’s now see how we should take care of our hair treated with dyes.
Dyed hair & products
- Use a specific shampoo and mask for colored hair.
These products are designed to protect color and prolong its life. Avoid shampoos with sulfates, as they can cause the color to fade faster; or, in the worst case, it results in a strange, if not horrible and rusty, color.
My favorite mask is the Kerastase Masquintense, I usually buy it in a giant size because it lasts longer and is better priced, but when I can’t find it, I buy it in the normal size. Here I give you the shampoo that has worked best for me of all the ones I have tried:
Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin Shampoo
Gently Cleanses & Replenishes Moisture for Soft, Shiny Hair | With Plant-Based Proteins & Niacinamide | For Fine to Medium Dry Hair
Yes, I know that Kerastase is an expensive brand, but I prefer to pay for good products that will last a long time rather than going to the hairdresser so often. Apart from the fact that long and messy hair there is no way to comb it. As I said, among friends talking about these topics, we all agree on the same thing: it is better to have good products than good hairdressers. The hairdresser lasts a few days, the products much longer.
- Wash your hair with warm or cold water instead of hot.
Hot water can open the hair cuticle and cause color to fade faster. Also, avoid washing your hair too frequently, as this can also cause the color to fade faster.
- Apply a hair mask or treatment once a week to keep colored hair hydrated and healthy. The treatment will help repair damage caused by the dye and protect the color.
In my case I have dry and long hair, so as I mentioned above, the products that work best for me are those from the Kerastase nourishing range, and they are the mask that I mentioned and the shampoo from the same range; Here is the mask:
KERASTASE Nutritive Masquintense Hair Mask | Deeply Nourishes & Conditions
With Plant-Based Proteins & Niacinamide | For Fine to Medium Dry Hair | 6.8 Fl Oz
- Protect your dyed hair from the sun, chlorine and salt water.
These elements can cause the hair to dry out quickly, and the color to fade faster. Use hair sunscreen and avoid exposing your dyed hair to the sun for long periods of time. For me, the best heat protector that also nourishes dry hair is this protector that I put here.
Above all, it is important that you check that it is sealed when you buy it, (see image).
Do not trust imitations or brands that claim to be the same. They are not and I don’t know if they work. I have tried this, and I know it works:
Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique Heat Protecting Leave-In Cream
Deeply Condition and Reduce Frizz | Instant Softness & Shine | With Plant-based Proteins | For Medium to Thick Dry Hair
- Avoid using heat tools in your dyed hair.
Eat blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons too often as they can damage the color and health of your hair. Always use a heat protectant before applying heat to your hair.
- Regularly trim the ends of your dyed hair.
To eliminate split ends and keep you healthy and looking fresh. Use oils and leave-in protectors to space the cuts as widely as possible if you want to wear it long.
- Color touch-ups or color baths for dyed hair
If you notice that the color is fading, you can touch it up at home or go to your hairdresser to have it done. Avoid dyeing your hair too frequently, as this can damage your hair.
By following these tips, you can keep your colored (unbleached) hair looking healthy and vibrant for longer.
